Doesn’t the film industry follow a hierarchy in its media commitments? Most of them are sane voices but they largely belong to top media brands. It’s unusual to have a plethora of journalists commentate in a documentary. And there is more than one perspective from few journalists from leading media houses, with Barkha Dutt showing up as the usual face of journalism in the eyes of tinsel town. Yadav takes views from the key people, the surviving kins of the family, police, investigating Crime Branch officers. As controversial journalist Barkha Dutt says in the documentary, ““There is lack of inter-connectedness in the society” Another commentator here, a popular psychiatrist appropriately called out the unwillingness of people to open up for fear of shame from an equally closed society. The documentary is a grim reminder of the thin line between faith and blind faith. When this takes the form of psychosis, a tragedy is bound to happen. Among many things, Yadav also looks at the socio-economic impact on the neighbourhood.Īt the heart of this tragedy lies an uncomfortable dogmatic theory borne out of patriarchy. The third episode is contemplative and introspective in nature. The first episode covers the tragedy, the subsequent effect, drama, while at the end of the second episode the shocking truth leaves you disturbed. Yadav and her team deserve credit for giving a balanced, unbiased account of the tragic story. Unaware viewers can uncover the truth through the Netflix Documentary series. We wouldn’t divulge the reasons in our review. Those familiar with the case would know the truth. All is done in an (largely) objective manner, keeping the sensitivity of the issue at hand.
House of secrets rating series#
Titled as House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths, the documentary series examines the reasons behind the tragedy and subtly questions the dogmatic beliefs in society. Three years on, Parched director Leena Yadav gives us a detailed account of the tragic story through a three-part Netflix Documentary series. The subsequent investigations and the disclosure left one totally shocked. The incident sent shockwaves across the largely peaceful locality and the nation at large. However, it was a hellacious period for the surviving kins of the family, neighbours who perhaps are still rankled by what transpired in the wee hours of 1 July, 2018.Ĩ0-year-old Narayani Devi was found strangulated in her bedroom, while 10 of her family members were found hanging like the aerial roots of a Badh tree. It was a much-publicised case initially but as often public memory is short, and one moved on from it.

In 2018, the nation was left shocked when on the morning of 1 July, 2018, 11 members of the Bhatia family (including two 15-year-old boys) were found dead in their house located in the congested bylane of Burari in North East Delhi. Such was the magnitude of the grisly episode that it left with you a lump in your throat. Ahhh! Where do we begin with? Honestly, it’s hard to know.
